We moved into our new home in April 2023 and knew it needed bringing up to more modern standards so were advised to update the loft insulation as a matter of urgency. It’s an early 1800s cottage so the use of natural and breathable materials was high on our priority list so we did a lot of research for products to use and the Isolena brand was repeatedly recommended by a number of surveyors and renovation specialists.
The attic space was not a nice place to spend a few days – hunched over wearing full PPE (hazmat suits, respirators, goggles and gloves) to remove the old fibreglass insulation, rat nests and poo, rubble, straw, water tanks and more! The house had been re-roofed in the 80s so there was a lot to take out and we ended up with over 100kg of rubble and over 80 sacks of smelly insulation! The lath and plaster ceilings needed a lot of vacuuming so our two day job took us nearly a week.
Once everything was out we were able to leave the loft to breathe for a few (cold) days before we stuffed all the fluffy new sheep wool through the tiny hatch and began the enjoyable job of laying the new insulation. The relief at not having to wear as much PPE was lovely, we could breathe freely and handle the wool without skin irritation. Being so easy to cut with scissors also made it a much quicker process when filling in small spaces. Since we finished we’ve finally been able to put the heating back on and have noticed a significant increase in the temperature inside the house. We have lot more work to do elsewhere to insulate the property but the sheep wool is already making an impact and we will certainly be using it again when it comes to other areas in our house.
Delivery was speedy and we were able to arrange a specific date which makes such a difference when space is a bit limited with other ongoing jobs.
